Hiring Systems and Cloud Engineers: Reliability Requires the Right Skills

The short answer: Start with the environment and operating outcomes. A job title cannot tell you whether you need a support-focused systems engineer, a cloud migration specialist or a platform engineer who develops automation.

Infrastructure work spans Windows and Linux services, virtualisation, identity, networks, Microsoft 365, cloud platforms, monitoring and automation. A vacancy that demands mastery of all these areas may deter the people best suited to its actual core work.

Map the environment and the work

List your production platforms, hybrid or cloud footprint, on-call arrangements and near-term projects. Decide whether the role is responsible for keeping services stable, executing a migration, automating deployments or redesigning a platform.

Assess incidents and ownership

Ask about a production outage the candidate investigated. What symptoms appeared, which evidence was gathered and how was the fault isolated? What did the candidate do to reduce the chance of recurrence?

For Azure or AWS specialists, explore identity, network boundaries, deployment, observability, backup and cost. For DevOps or platform roles, ask about infrastructure as code, pipelines and service reliability, while being precise about the work they personally owned.

Include security without making everyone a security specialist

Good infrastructure engineers understand privileged access, patching, change control and documentation. They should know when to escalate specialist security decisions. Separate operational security responsibility from dedicated cyber roles.

Interview for communication

A skilled engineer should explain a technical issue, its business impact and a sensible recovery plan. Ask what they would communicate to users and leadership during an incident.
