Hiring Salesforce Specialists: Match the Role to Your Platform's Maturity

The short answer: Choose the specialist based on the work: administration, business process design, custom development, integration or architecture. Salesforce certifications provide useful context but do not replace evidence of relevant delivery.

A business implementing Sales Cloud for the first time needs a different skill mix from one managing a complex Service Cloud environment with integrations to finance and customer platforms.

Define the platform and the pain point

Specify the Salesforce products in use, business owners, integrations, pain points and planned changes. Is the problem adoption, workflow complexity, data quality, release governance or custom application development?

Understand the roles

Administrators typically maintain configuration, permissions, reporting and platform operations. Developers may build with Apex and Lightning Web Components. Functional consultants and business analysts connect business processes to requirements. Architects design cross-platform solutions and integration decisions.

Evaluate configuration judgment

Ask the candidate when they choose declarative tools such as Flow versus custom development. Listen for maintainability, access controls, testing, scalability and the ability of the internal team to support the solution after go-live.

Assess data and integration

For technical roles, ask how the candidate handles API failures, duplicate records, data permissions, release changes and system boundaries. CRM value depends on trustworthy data and processes, not only feature delivery.

Look for actual product ownership

A candidate who configured a few screens and someone who owned an enterprise deployment may list similar platform names. Ask what they designed, delivered, maintained and improved.

Interview checklist

  • Candidate explains the Salesforce products they used.
  • Role-specific evidence matches admin, developer or architect expectations.
  • Integration and data risks are understood.
  • User adoption and handover are considered.
